Photonis Teams with Los Alamos National Laboratory to Win Research and Development Award

Sturbridge, Massachusetts November 12, 2019 – Los Alamos National Laboratory recently announced nine technologies that have received R&D 100 Awards and three inventions that won Special Recognition Awards, including a Gold and Silver for Corporate Social Responsibility, and a Gold Award for Market Disruptor Products. Photonis was a member of the development team in the Atomic Armor project, which won an R&D 100 Award as well as the Gold Award for Market Disruptor Products.

Atomic Armor uses a Materials by Design approach to develop material coatings which allow electrons and photons to pass through the coating, while blocking chemical reactions such as corrosion or oxidation that could damage the underlying surface. Atomic Armor is the first and only “tunable” shielding for technological devices. These one-atom-thick coatings are customizable, so users can control the needed characteristics in order to extend a device’s lifetime and maximize its functionality.
